You are sitting down. Excited to find time to write and wham that blank page in front of you is echoing all that empty space where your ideas usually are.
Do Not Freak!
This is a common thing for even the most experienced of wordsmiths. Even more important is that the fix is easy and anyone can do it.
Write!
More specifically do a brain dump of one page, about 750 words, of anything you can. Some starting suggestions are:
- Write about your day: did a bird fly past your window, the last conversation you had, or wish you did.
- Write down the description of what you can see from where you are sitting.
- Have a scene from a story you read that you loved or hated? Put down what you can remember, add in what you liked/hated about it and what you would change.
- Maybe a character wants to talk, but they are not in the story you are writing. Give them a page and then store for later use.
- Take a news story that caught your eye and reimage how it would go in a fictional world of your choice.
- Something on your mind that is overshadowing the work you want to do. Give it some of that blank page.
The reason for this jumble of words is not to make sense, not to further along your work. This quick page, more or less, is to get your brain to empty so you can work on your project without the clouding of everyday thoughts and concerns.
Some authors have been known to do this on a daily basis whether they work on the WIP (work in progress) or not. As this is not for sharing, you can get a page of words down in minutes. Giving you an easy win to boost your confidence before getting down to whatever work you needed to accomplish for the day.
This is also a quick and easy way to keep you on your writing track when entering other stages of getting your story published and marketed. Editing, proofreading, submissions and marketing all can take energy away from your desire to write.
Keeping your habit of daily writing is essential to becoming the best wordsmith possible.
The only way to improve your writing is to, you guessed it, WRITING!
